The autonomic nervous system responds to threat through two pathways: sympathetic mobilisation (fight and flight) and dorsal vagal immobilisation (shutdown). The nervous system's survival responses

When your nervous system detects threat, real or perceived, it activates a survival response automatically, before your conscious mind has time to respond. These are not personality traits. They are physiological responses shaped by what worked to protect you in the past.

Most people have one or two patterns they return to under stress. Recognising yours, with curiosity rather than judgment, is where regulation begins.

The four survival states

Sympathetic: Fight

Fight is forward-oriented sympathetic mobilisation. The system moves toward the perceived threat, increasing heart rate, flooding muscles with blood, sharpening attention. In daily life it rarely looks like physical aggression. It looks like snapping, becoming defensive, perfectionism, or a surge of anger that seems disproportionate to the situation.

Body signs: jaw tension, clenched fists, heat in the chest, urge to argue or control. Long-term pattern: identifying as angry or irritable, chronic conflict, exhaustion from constant vigilance.

Sympathetic: Flight

Flight is escape-oriented sympathetic mobilisation. The system prepares to run, physically or mentally. In daily life it shows up as avoidance, overplanning, restlessness, and reaching for distraction when something important needs attention. The classic pattern: sitting down to do the thing that matters, and instead cleaning, scrolling, or finding something else urgent.

Body signs: jittery legs, racing heart, inability to sit still, overcommitting. Long-term pattern: burnout, the sense of always being busy but never getting to what matters.

Blended: Freeze

Freeze is a blended state: high sympathetic charge held under dorsal vagal inhibition. One foot on the accelerator, one on the brake. The mobilisation energy of fight or flight is present, but the body cannot act, so it suspends instead. Freeze has two sub-expressions below.

Body signs: heaviness, brain fog, time disappearing, staring at a screen without being able to start.

Freeze sub-expression: Functional Freeze

Functional freeze is sustained sympathetic activation beneath dorsal suppression. The body is running on low-level charge while the dorsal brake keeps the surface functional. A person in functional freeze continues going through the motions: working, socialising, meeting obligations. But feels like an observer of their own life rather than someone living it.

Body signs: chronic fatigue, shallow breath, wired and tired simultaneously, reaching goals and feeling nothing.

Freeze sub-expression: Fawn

Fawn is sympathetic flight energy with dorsal suppression, redirected into appeasement. The body is mobilised, ready to escape, but that impulse is channelled into accommodating and people-pleasing rather than running. The result is compliance at the surface, constriction underneath.

Fawn looks like saying yes before you've thought about what you want, monitoring others' emotions to manage your own safety, putting others first, not from generosity, but from a body-level sense that not doing so is dangerous.

Dorsal: Shutdown

Shutdown is full dorsal vagal collapse, the system's last resort when mobilisation is impossible and threat is overwhelming. Unlike freeze, shutdown carries no sympathetic charge. The body goes offline entirely: heart rate drops, muscle tone falls, the system withdraws from engagement.

Shutdown looks like profound flatness, not the disconnection of functional freeze, but a depth of withdrawal where even pretending to be present is no longer possible.

Body signs: profound heaviness, numbness, very low energy, inability to feel emotion. Long-term: deep depression, dissociation, life happening at a very long distance.

The principle underneath

Regulation cannot be forced. Every practice is an invitation. A system in shutdown cannot be pushed back online; a system in fight cannot be talked down. What matters is creating the conditions in which the nervous system can choose to move, meeting the body where it actually is, not where you want it to be.

Working with each response

The body, not the mind, is the entry point. Once you recognise the state you are in, there are movements and practices that tend to support each one:

Fight: the body prepared to confront. Tense-and-release movements, pushing the hands or feet into a firm surface, can help complete the cycle. Then slow the exhale.

Flight: the body prepared to run. Movement tends to help: a brief walk, shaking out the arms and legs. Then ground.

Freeze and functional freeze: go slowly. The body has gone into conservation and cannot be forced back. Gentle opening movements: arm circles, shoulder rolls. Then ground.

Fawn: similar to freeze. After gently opening the body, notice where a boundary could have been expressed. You are not reliving the situation: you are completing what the body wanted to do but could not.

Shutdown: start smaller. Warmth, gentle rocking, slow humming, or simply orienting to your environment. Come back in increments. The system needs evidence that it has arrived somewhere safe before it can begin to return.
